An Alternate Soundtrack City Tour by Gilbert Guerrero and Kathleen Quillian

* The June 2nd tour begins at Southern Exposure Gallery, 12 noon. Bring a radio or check one out at the gallery. All subsequent tours are self-guided and run continuously on 88.9FM Saturday through Sunday throughout the month of June. Pick up a Transient Frequencies program from Southern Exposure Gallery for directions.

Enter a temporal and cultural vortex in the Mission District, where El Corazón de la Misión meets Hipster Heaven and where 19th century Victorians meet 20th century Modern storefronts. A gradual, but noticeable change takes place in the surrounding landscape of the two-block area between Mission and Valencia Streets at 20th Street. Here, one can pass freely through the geo-political border that separates the largely Latino shopping district and barrio from gentrified Valencia Street boutiques and over-priced housing; or move between Victorian and Modern architecture at the historical fire line drawn along 20th Street in 1906 to stop the fire caused by the big earthquake. Using locally broadcast radio signals, the artists will take listeners on a journey through space and time in Transient Frequencies--where time becomes elastic and fact mingles with fiction to weave a multi-layered narrative into one far-out story of the Mission District. Participants will be guided past contemporary boutiques, Mexican taquerias, lesbian bars, punk clubs, and 19th century brothels, picking up sounds channeled from the past, present, and future along the way. Near the end of the tour, participants will join a short film screening at the seminal Mission District gallery Artists' Television Access where the film will synch up with the sound of the audio tour to open up a final, four-dimensional window into the spirit of the Mission.

Made in collaboration with Transistor Radio Theatre and Neighborhood Public Radio. Soundtrack includes the voices of Linda Arnejo, Craig Baldwin, Gilbert Guerrero, Sara Guerrero-Herrera, Raymond Hernandez, Anne McGuire, and Sylvia Schedelbauer.
