California Dreaming (Seismic Shift)
Through a series of 300+ slides and an accompanying audio soundtrack, California Dreaming (Seismic Shift) presents a docu-dramatization of the artists' travels through the state of California along the path of the San Andreas Fault System--beginning in the north in Mendocino, down through the lush hills of the California wine country, through the densely populated San Francisco Bay Area, past San Jose, Hollister, Parkfield, Los Angeles and Palm Springs, to the very southern edge of the state in Calexico where several branches of the fault continuously "slip" past each other and threaten to break off the Western edge of California from the rest of the state at any given moment. The project frames the strange and wily history of California in the context of this famous and volatile fault--an area which separates two of the world's seven major tectonic plates and which runs almost 800 miles through the length of the state. What drives people to live in such a dangerous area as this? The project considers the various cultural, spiritual, economical, political and historical elements that define the state of California and puts them in the context of ancient, active, geological terms.California Dreaming (Seismic Shift) has been presented as a live performance for the group show Form/Reform at The Oakland Art Gallery and for the Illuminated Corridor.
It has also been presented as an installation in the exhibition Road Trip at the San Jose Museum of Art.
